Ricardo Vila Nova shares how to achieve glass hair...

Glass hair is the beauty trend that shows no signs of abating, and we’re not surprised. It’s the ultimate healthy hair look that requires tresses to be smooth, shiny and reflective, just like glass.

“We all want to look as healthy as possible. From glowing skin, and strong bodies to gorgeous hair, many of us spend a good portion of our days attempting to tick these boxes. Plus, it’s literally in our DNA to find those who are in good health more attractive. Not only do we use or sense of smell to figure this out we also use our sense of sight,” explains Ricardo Vila Nova.

And you’d have to be blind to miss the fact that glass hair takes healthy looking hair up a notch. However, it’s not really a style you can cheat your way into sporting. “If you want to rock glass hair, you really need to take good care of your tresses and your scalp, as this look quite literally shines a spotlight on your hair. So, if it’s dry, dehydrated, and splitting you’ll be hard pressed to achieve anything other than a dull, frizzy finish,” adds Vila Nova.

How to lay the foundation for glass hair

The key characteristic of glass hair is the megawatt shine, and this is achieved by way of a culmination of methods. From what you eat (protein is key), what supplements you take (biotin, vitamin A, C, D, and E, zinc and folate can work wonders), and how often you cleanse, to what products you use at home and what revitalising treatments you have in-clinic.

No element is more important than the other when it comes to hair health, small daily practices can result in major results. But if your hair has seen better days, it can be difficult to reverse the damage.

“This is where our in-clinic treatments come into their own. Our personalised offerings expertly blend the likes of hydrolysed keratin and B panthenol with other high-performance, hydrating, shine inducing ingredients like collagen, hyaluronic acid and lactic acid. B panthenol draws in moisture, smooths the cuticle and reduces frizzing, splitting and breakage. While hydrolysed keratin is a protein molecule that penetrates the hair cuticle. In so doing it works to address damage to your hair. Namely, increasing elasticity, strengthening, locking in hydration and restoring hair density. Once your hair is in good condition, it will be able to better withstand the amount of heat styling glass hair requires and it will already have a natural shine of its own,” explains Vila Nova.

How to achieve the glass hair look

Glass hair has to be clean so start by cleansing with a clarifying cleanser to ensure you can wave adieu to excess oil, and product build-up. Follow this with a shine inducing conditioner packed with hydrating and nourishing actives. Wring out the excess water in your hair before heat styling, “but be sure to use a microfibre towel so you don’t rub and lift the cuticles of your hair, which will lead to frizz and dulling of the hair,” shares Vila Nova.

When the hair is damp, liberally apply a heat protectant, one that has anti-frizz properties is a winner when it comes to achieving the smooth locks you’re looking for. Then blow-dry your hair into a smooth straight style with a paddle brush. Once straight, section the hair and use a straightening iron to create a poker straight finish and set into place with an anti-frizz hairspray.

“Since light bounces off ultra straight hair with ease, for the high shine, glass effect – hair is generally styled straight. However, if you prefer to keep your hair texture in its natural state, then adding shine and definition to your waves and curls with a combination of a gel, and an oil will allow you to achieve the maximum amount of shine despite the fact that wavy and curly hair types absorb more light than straight hair,” explains Vila Nova.
