The Chat Room: A conversation with Kavita Mehta...

Kavita Mehta

British lifestyle influencer, Kavita Mehta, spoke to The Hair Dispatch about all things post-partum hair loss and the defining moments of her life.

Do you think your hair defines your personality?

Yes and no, but it’s important to me and yes, to some extent it does define my personality. It tends to be very reflective of how I’m feeling. And I’ve got very dynamic hair, it’s naturally very curly. There are periods of time where I leave my hair curly and sort of own that. I once made a pact with myself that I would leave my hair curly for a whole month to stop further heat damage and it really helped preserve the quality of my hair. But when I’ve had my curls blow-dried straight, I’m more confident and feel like I’m ready to take on the world.

Has your hair changed as you’ve gotten older?

Having children saw me develop postpartum hair loss, which thanks to some lifestyle changes like eating more protein, taking supplements and growth treatments at Ricardo Vila Nova Hair Doctors, I’ve managed to turn back the clock on my hair.

Why did you choose to see Ricardo Vila Nova?

There are so many haircare brands claiming they can boost hair growth, but rather than buy into all these generic products, I picked Ricardo for his personalised approach. I knew he had a wealth of expertise, and that he would tailor his advice and treatments to address my unique hair and concerns. He gave me faith that I wouldn’t have thin hair forever, and I love the way he approaches his treatments. They’re high-tech and science led without being medicated as I didn’t want to go down the route of taking minoxidil.

Have you seen results?

I think naturally your hair gets thinner with age and I think that’s something that we have to accept too, but I’ve definitely seen a dramatic difference. Of course, anything to do with hair health is a long process. I’ve been having treatments with Ricardo for just over a year, and already the growth, density, and the general health of my hair has greatly improved.

What have you learnt through this process?

When you feel confident about your hair, you feel confident overall. However, it’s not the end when your hair falls out. There are options and you need to trust the process. Reducing anxiety around hair loss is important. I realised that I’ve always had a level of underlying hair anxiety and hair dysmorphia, but now thanks to the treatments at 212.2 Ricardo Vila Nova Hair Doctors, I feel more confident that it’s not something I need to be worrying about all the time.

What’s the most defining moment of your life?

It’s probably a tie between having my first child and completing my fashion degree course at Central St. Martins.

What can’t you live without?

I’ve got this compact little pill case, and I carry it in all my handbags, and it’s got one of every vitamin, painkiller, safety pin and hair tie that I need. I can’t live without it.

Who’s your main inspiration?

I’m loving the make-up artist and founder of Westman Atelier, Gucci Westman. She’s inspiring – I think she’s just an amazing mother and she’s all about clean, healthy-looking skin and just love her product line.

How do you define self-care?

Investing in yourself, and not feeling guilty about doing things just for you. So, a big treat to myself once having kids was hiring a personal trainer, and investing in my hair health.

What are you proud of?

I’m proud of my babies, obviously. But I’m also proud of myself for coping with working and being a mum. I think it’s really hard sometimes, so I’m proud that I’m able to find the balance.

What’s your favourite object?

It would have to be my Kindle, despite the fact that I’m such a paperback person, I’ve found having a Kindle so handy and convenient.

What are you afraid of?

I’m just afraid of the mundanity of not being happy. And when I talk about happiness, I think it comes from the most simple things, rather than the typical things we put a lot of importance on but that don’t really matter. It’s easy to find yourself in moments where life is too fast and you can start feeling ungrateful and I’m afraid of falling into that trap of not being grateful.
